Kameyama Hachimangu

Former Prefectural Shrine of Yamaguchi built in late 8th century

About a 15 minute drive from Shimonoseki IC is the Kameyama Hachimangu. This shrine has a granite torii gate at the entrance and the shrine itself is located on top of a small hill. From there you can see the view of the Kanmon Bridge as well. The shrine precincts are filled with historic features and the granite torii gate is among the largest of its kind in Japan. Ito Hirobumi, Japan’s first prime minister, first met his future with here. Also has a large statue of a fugu fish, which is well known to be a famous dish in Shimonoseki. The shirne is also located right across from the Karato Market as well as a 600 meter walk from the famous Akama Shrine.
